Title: RIP Willie McCovey
Post by: JoeC on November 01, 2018, 08:20:03 AM
One of the greatest power hitters I ever saw. Stretch was a scary man with a bat in his hand at home plate. Came up to the Giants two years too late to play for the NY Giants.

He, along with Hank Aaron, Ozzie Smith, Billy Williams, Satchel Paige, Cleon Jones and Tommie Agee all shared same home town of Mobile, AL.

Stretch was a gamer in all aspects of life. His '59 ROY stats remain one of the great accomplishments.

Couple trivia questions on the 1962 World series and Game 7, at Candlestick.

Anyone watching recalls in the bottom of the 9th inning, Yankees led, 1-0. SF Giants with 2 outs, had runners on second and third. McCovey hit a hellacious line drive for the final out (so hard it knocked 2B Bobby Richardson's hat off).

1. Who was the Yankee pitcher?

2. Who had knocked in the only run in the game (even though he was not credited with a RBI)?

Ralph Terry

Kubek--richardson?

I remember  listening  to Les Keiter's  recreation  broadcast  on WINS 1010.   2 HRs  & 2  doubles, right?

W/the Dodgers  so popular  &  Giants not--why  only  Giant recreations?    I bet  O'Malley  blocked it--more  $$  or just to be a pain in the  butt.

The 2HRs  & doubles  were in 1st game.   Wen Willie arrived--Cepeda went to  OF or 3B?   Also.Willie later went to OF  bec Cepeda could only  play 1st.

Doc, right about Ralph Terry. He pitched a complete game, 4 hitter. At least 3 relievers would've been in this game for the Yanks if played today. Ralph sorta redeemed himself for the 1960 debacle with Maz.

Kubek grounded into a DP in the middle innings, allowing the only run to score.

I recall listening out on LI  to the recreation to the Giants first game in Seals Stadium in SF. 1958 opener against Dodgers. Remember 3B Jim Davenport was the star of that one. Think he was a  rookie that year.
