Roy could have played all 4 yrs in the Coliseum. When I met him at Vero 1990 it was my 1st & his last camp. Got very teary eyed & had to work hard not to cry. (Me,not Roy) I recall how great he was with kids on Felton. Duke's farm was in N San Diego Cty.

Joe/DDW,
Roy's playing days were over just before I got into baseball at age 7 in '59. But I must have read his "it's Good To Be Alive" book 20 times and was "hit" at the Glen Cove ice patch incident every time. In the early 60's while attending a Yankees (that's right) old-timers game and walking with my dad outside the stadium, we saw him being wheeled by handlers and my dad spotted/recognized him and pointed him out to me. I can still see the image.

Only minor consolation, and it's very minor, was that the accident happened to him after he got to play 10 very productive years in the majors and was 36 years years old.
Dodgers deserve much credit for not turning their backs on him as an organization. Think he moved to LA as soon as he could after rehab and lived many years in Woodland Hills. He had 36 yrs as a great athlete, and then the last 35 in the wheelchair.
Wonder if modern medicine could've achieved another outcome for him than was possible back in '58? Fractured his 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae and had a compressed spine, according to Wiki.

Rite--Wilhelm's HR--amazing. How about Joe with 379 HRs believe & only 369 K's. Stanton has about 200 ks already. Joe was robbed TWICE by Ken Keltner & then in hit another 17-18 straight. 66 game streak for Seals. Joe was pretty much dysfunctional personality wise--but wen asked why he ran so hard in say 9th inning of a 9-0 game--said " Probably a lot of fans here never saw me and never will again--I owe 100% effort to them." Is that including World Series and All Star HRs? Joe D. had only 361 regular season Hrs.

379 was close.
Joe--Roxie took very good of Roy--sweet lady.
Most forget--but he had a popular interview show--"Campy's Corner" before the Dodgers moved to LA. Think on WOR--9.

Interesting dynamic of "tension" between Robinson and Campy. Two VERY different personalities. Robinson, it's reported, was often frustrated with Campy's lack of militancy on civil rights. Almost to the point of him viewing Campy as a bit of an "Uncle Tom." Campy thought Jackie was too outspoken. Yet, obviously, they got along as teammates and friends later in life.
Ironic because Robinson ended up a staunch Republican (huge fan of Richard Nixon in the 60s).

Of course Roy was half white--Italian.
Scully quoted Roy a lot--most common was-"you need a lot of little boy in you to play this game."
Dont recall much coming from Newcombe, Black, or Gilliam either. Amoros was Cuban-English poor.

Ball is juiced as well as players.
Carpenter just tied rec for most for extra base hits with 3Hrs & 2 doubles & had 3 HRs by 6th inning. I know Adcock had 18 TB.--double plus 4 Hrs.
My new steroidboy--Muncy.

I may have posted here about Ohtani--surgery not blood to"cure" his elbow.
The crazy stats in baseball continue--Betances--all 6-8 of him has the reliever record--5 straight yrs of 100+ K's. Cant believe Rivera did not do it. Maybe its 1st 5 yrs of career.
Been watching Stanton a lot--hardest hitter in BB--but MANY times looks feeble & almost like has vision problems. Well on way to 200+ K's.

The .424 guy is Wee Willie Keeler
Two-sport guys include:
Steve Hamilton Dick Groat Dick Ricketts Dave Ricketts (at least one of them) Deion Sanders Bo Jackson Danny Ainge Mark Hendrickson Gene Conley Jim Thorpe (would you consider him a 3 sport guy?) Tom Glavine (almost)

Keeler is right. Who else hit .424? Who hit .438? Name 2 players that hit .420. Still several 2 sport players missing (especially pre-'70s). Heismann Trophy 2 sport guy still missing.

Vic Janowicz was a Redskins HB (on some horrible Washington teams) who was also a backup Catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the mid-50s. He was mediocre at best in both leagues. I don't think he ever won the Heisman. I only know that from being a lifelong Redskins fan.
Other guess would be Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice. A bit before my time but I know he was a multi-sports guy.

Robb--did u know that in 1941 when Ted hit 406--a sacfly [now] counted as an out.
Think he hit 8 or 9. So that would havegot his average to 415 or so.
Name only guy to play in Rose Bowl & world series.

Yes, I knew that sacrifice flies were counted as outs before. I remember Connors (1B) with The Dodgers. I didn't know he played in The Rose Bowl.

Yes! I remember that Jackie Jensen had that written on the back of his card. 1st Japanese player in The Major Leagues was Masanori Murakami. 1st Dominican - Ossie Virgil - Giants.

#4 -- Tim Stoddard played on the David Thompson-led NC State championship team and then, some yrs later, pitched for the Orioles in the WS.

Doc, I don't know answers to those two although Mike's choice of Ron Blomberg for first DH sounds good to me. The Knick question is tough. I'd have to look it up.
