A friend of mine wanted to join our forum, but was blocked.  I asked DooWop Dan and Big Jack to make it possible for him to join.  Dan probably lifted the ban on outsiders being able to join for just the one day for him to pass through the registration process, and these Bots got through during the period registration was activated.  I'm sure they'll lock it again.  But, I wonder how many other legitimate VGH fans would have joined but were blocked out.  I think it is a shame.

That's worrying, Robb, on several levels!

1. That there are so many unwanted lurkers waiting for the "gate to lift" allowing a legit new member in (not sure if I fully believe this is how it happened, but certainly possible), and

2. that prospective new members would find it difficult to join.

Lastly, thanks for recruiting new blood. Hopefully, he or she will add to the discussion when they settle in!

I wonder how other sites successfully enable "legitimate" new users to join while keeping out bots, spammers, and the like?

My friend, WillyJW, got in as a new member, so I'm guessing that Big Jack or DooWop Dan turned off the registration function again immediately after.  So we shouldn't get anymore Bot spam.  But, I still wonder how many potential members were turned away for forever.

Maybe 10% of the time when I log on, I check to see who else is on the site. Some names I'll see I recognize (some as former posters who now, for whatever reason, don't post any longer); sometimes it'll be a name I've never seen before. Wonder if those are "guests" (or even if this site allows people to visit without joining as a member??). I think that used to be possible.

The Disney Comics Forum I frequented had to disband because of robotic spam.  The only 2 other fora I still frequent other than this one, (Soulful Detroit and Soul-Source) both have NO problem keeping robotic spam out because they both had one of their founding partners be a professional website developer (who have stayed up-to-date on current website operation technologies).  Unfortunately, that technology is way too complicated for the layman, and this forum has no expert on it as a member of its administration.

Yep. And, I hate to say it four years later, we may still be (except for Robb's friend) the "newest" members.

I joined this Forum in the second week of February 2016.

My path was through the late Bruce Woolf. My recollection was that Bruce's site had a general notice posted at some point in early 2016 that anyone enjoying his daily SOMs might wanna check out this site. From that point, I don't recall any difficulty at all in signing up.

Ironically (as it turned out), Shandy DM'ed me after my first tentative post with a warm welcome. She also sort of gave me the 'lay of the land' in terms of her background and that of some others.

Wasn't it about 2 years ago that Mike or Big Jack informed us about the avalanche of robot spammers, and that he has going to have to de-activate the new member registration function, to stop the flooding of spam on this forum?  Apparently, that ban on joining was never removed.  THAT, rather than lack of interest from outside, was the reason no new members joined, and we saw no posts from "guests".

Robb, all that rings a bell.

Under the "Help" tab, though, there still appears to be a way for "guests" (or others) to Register. Don't know if that still works ... or, if it does, who the info goes to (Dan?). Legitimate new members on this Forum would be a nice shot in the arm.

No, guests can't register.  My friend tried to register on his own many times during different days and times, and ALWAYS  got back the message that: "This forum is not currently taking on new members." Dan had to get my friend's information, and enter it himself, as a special case from inside the system.  The blocking is still on.
