Title: 1954 Orioles
Post by: JoeC on June 16, 2021, 08:02:09 PM
What was the O's lineup in the first home game played by the Baltimore Orioles on their move from St. Louis. Clues provided:

2B - 8 yr starter with the Browns/Orioles, mostly at 2B

1B - An ex-Phillies Whiz Kid

CF - Played 8 yrs with the Senators prior to 1954 O's debut; missing thumb hampered throwing but not his hitting

RF - Name forever connected in WS history with Willie Mays

LF - Nephew of baseball's Cuccinello brothers; grad of Bryant HS in Long Island City; basketball player at NYU; future ML manager

3B - Voted 8x to All-Star game; once led the AL in RBI; lots of power (especially for an Infielder back then)

SS - Starter for Browns/O's; later, backup for NYY and other teams; lifetime .219 hitter; another future ML manager

C - First C to wear eyeglasses

P- Led the AL in both K's and BB in 1954

The '53 Browns and 54 Orioles are right up my alley!

2b   Bobby Young

1B Eddie Waitkus

CF Gil Coan

RF Vic Wertz

LF They had a lot of left fielders that year.  I don't remember ANY with an Italian name?  Must be a nephew through his mother.  My guess is Sam Mele.

3B Vern Stephens

SS Billy Hunter

C Clint Courtney (The Toy Bulldog)

P Bob Turley

Wasn't the movie"The Natural"  with Redford based on Eddie Waitkus  getting shot by a crazy female?

IF it was, they told some of the story incredibly incorrectly, having the lead become a super home run hitter.  Waitkus was a line drive hitter who never hit many home runs.

Wasn't really "based" on Waitkus getting shot by a deranged young woman in a hotel room. More like that incident serving as part of the author's "inspiration."
