These "dancers" were about as far from the Soul Train kids as you could get. General question: If you were one of these kids, would you be showing this video to your grandchildren? I probably would be but ... red-faced (and not from alcohol).

Enjoyable, 43. "Dancing variations of The Slauson." Anyone recall that unmemorable tune "Do the Slauson" by Round Robin? Mentions Major Lance is all I remember.

THAT's supposed to be "The Slausen Shuffle"?  That doesn't look like what Round Robin did, nor do I remember anyone doing that particular step.

Well, the dancers had apparently told Clark they were gonna do a "variation" of the Slauson.

Interesting note about the Buddy Deane Show which was on Baltimore's ABC affiliate. Baltimore was the only large US city to NOT take the American Bandstand "feed" from Philly every weekday afternoon. The local affiliate withstood fierce pressure from the ABC suits in NYC to drop Deane's competing show and take Clark's super popular AB.

So, kids raised in Bmore in the 50s grew up without knowing who Clark's "regulars" were and all the other trappings of the AB phenomenon, the rating of records, etc. They did pretty much get to see all the guests AB featured as Baltimore is only 90 miles south of Philly and most of those performers hit Deane's show right before or after Clark's.  Eventually, I think performers became scared of Dick's power and, over time, sort of fell away from making the short trek to Baltimore. Unless, of course, they were playing the Royal Theater anyway.

Being from LI, I didn't live through this but have many Maryland friends who did. They didn't feel they missed out.

Joe .. the performers appeared on the Buddy Deane show AFTER being on Clark's A.B.  . because Clark wouldn't book them if they had already appeared in Baltimore !

Buddy Deane show was the inspiration for the Broadway show and film "HairSpray"    . ..  it's "Negro Day" was a bone of contention between the advertisers and the station.

Jack, thanks so much for clarifying. It would be interesting to know exactly what other "pressure" that Clark and the ABC brass used to try to bring the Baltimore station mavericks into line. Deane and his DC counterpart, Milt Grant, had faces made for radio. Grant didn't go through the same pressure coz his show was not on the DC ABC affiliate.

Loved the original Hairspray movie, and John Waters in general (well, some of his outrageous stuff anyway).

Travolta was a total disaster in the movie remake.

I saw the show on Broadway, by the way . and loved it.

Nice to hear it was good on the stage. As for the movie remake, I felt sorry for the actors in it, there were so many memorable characters in the original. Hard if not impossible to top. But ... aimed at an audience who likely never saw the original.

I knew it as "The South Street" ..  note the dancer stays in one place and there is outward movement of the feet after the steps.   The "Bristol Stomp" was more of a straight up and down stomp, with the dancer moving a step or two forward and back .... but they were very similar in that they involved "stomping"    Smiley

There was a song and a dance called "The Stomp" too .. sort of a freeform combination of the two above.

I agree with your description of the Bristol Stomp, but I saw people do the dance on the link in other areas and called that the Bristol Stomp.  I never heard of a dance called the South Street, but I'm not saying there wasn't one.

There was  no South St  dance.  South  Street  runs from Penns Franklin  Field  to S Philly--so I know it well-it was -never a dance. There  were many  Philly dances--The 81,  the Strand,  the Crossfire--that never left town. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
