RIP. 78 yrs old. From the mid-60s to the mid-70s he was right there with Stargell, Killebrew, McCovey and Aaron as a HR hitter.

I always think of him as Richie Allen (the name he came to the majors with).

Thanks for that, Joe. I had no idea about the singing. A little higher voice than I would have expected!

Richie has been called the best player NOT in the Baseball Hall of Fame. His brother, Hank, came up with the expansion Washington Senators in the mid-60s and played for a variety of teams.

From Charlie & Pam Horner's newsletter: "He sang with and recorded with a local group called the Ebonistics.  Allen and the Ebonistics even sang during halftime of an NBA Philadelphia 76ers game.  If you're not familiar with Allen & the Ebonistics record, it's a great one.  Click "Echoes Of November.""

RIP.  I was in Philly when he came up.  Although NOW most Richards would not want to be called  Dick,--he did. The media called him Richie.  [Like calling Wilt the hated Stilt.]   I recall a  mysterious episode when he cut his wrist. He claimed he did it when pushing a stalled car he broke a headlight with it.  Is that possible?

He was a fan favorite-but not a media  favorite.
